ALL welcome = Primary and Secondary Art Teachers and why not invite your school’s Sustainability Coordinator along as well!
CASTAWAYS is an Exhibition of Sculpture created primarily from recycled/discarded materials. The CASTAWAYS Network session is an opportunity to network with your peers and be inspired by sculptors who have created many amazing forms from recycled materials. Lynn DiCiero, the curator of the Exhibition will take us on a tour of the sculptures, ending up at the Primary School entries.

When: SATURDAY 19 May, 2012 (NB: The Exhibition begins the previous Mother’s Day weekend, Saturday 12 May until Sunday 20 May.)

Time: 10.00 – 12.00 – with lunch afterwards if you wish.

Where: Rockingham Beach, 2 Val St, Rockingham.

What:

10.00 on – meet at a beachside café “Betty Blues” (it will be busy!) for coffee and social networking (10.45 walk over to the marquee)

11.00 Meet Lynn DiCiero at the Castaways Marquee outside the Yacht Club – on the lawn by the beach – you will see it easily.

Lynn will talk to us about the growth of the Exhibition, its rationale and lead us on a tour of the Exhibition with background information about the participating artists and materials used. Time taken will depend on number of questions asked & resulting discussion

12.00 on – time to go and look again at your favourite pieces, take your photos for instructional purposes in your classroom – think close up methods of attachment, use of the elements, shape, texture, pattern,… inclusion of principles – movement, perspective,…

NB: Visitors have a chance to be part of the fun with the inaugural Castaways Photographic Award. Simply take the best photograph of works on the beach and visit the City’s website for more information and guidelines of how to enter.

12.30 If you have the time and the inclination to socialise and network further, meet back at XX? for lunch – Might be best if we see where there is room on the day once we have an RSVP idea of numbers.

Cost: FREE but all catering at your own cost – it’s a good one to bring a non-member colleague along to as well for Free! Check with your school’s sustainability coordinator or a class teacher enthused by recycling – often working in partnership with another teacher allows for a greater depth and breadth of meaningful content as well as skills outcomes achieved. ie conserve energy and maximise impact by working smarter – not harder!!

RSVP: Pauline on obees@upnaway.com by Thurs 17 May Please also indicate if you will stay for lunch so we can arrange a booking.

Some background notes/media release

More than 50 entries have been selected out of over 90 submissions for the Castaways 2012 Sculpture Exhibition, now in its fifth year at Rockingham Foreshore, with competition for a place in the exhibition becoming tighter with each passing year. Curator Lyn DiCiero said visitors can expect the unexpected. “With such a wide pool of entries, the final selection of works is compelling.”

There’s a four metre high rocket ship made from salvaged aluminium from the decommissioned Prospector train, an oversized snail with a special recycling message in its silvery aluminium trail, to a matching set of birds with feathers made from old playing cards

City of Rockingham Deputy Mayor, Deb Hamblin said Castaways is a major tourism drawcard for the City: “Seeing our beautiful foreshore come to life for the exhibition is a wonderful experience and Castaways carries a special message about recycling and creating these works from recycled materials presents unique challenges for the artists.

For the second year running, a special Schools Award is also being held on the final weekend of the exhibition, with six entries from local schools in the running to win the BHP Billiton Perpetual Schools Award Trophy.
