‘Narrative’ has proved to be a captivating theme used in a variety of ways by members of our association with students from all phases of education. Our individual stories are what make us who we are. Humans have an innate need to express their story. You are sure to be inspired to incorporate the narrative theme into your programming for next year when you read the range of project ideas suitable for primary through to upper secondary.

We have featured Highgate Primary School and their three panel mural, which explores the cultural diversity of their students’ stories.

Fleur Schell, our feature artist who is a Ceramicist and the Director of Soda Studios, shares the story behind the inspiration for her whimsical and delicate porcelain objects and figures. We also introduce fellow artists of Soda Studio: Karen Millar, Alana McVeigh and showcase Rachel Zimmerman’s delightful collages.

Laurel Nannup has a very special story to tell through printmaking. Art on the Move has given us permission to include the Education package developed by them to support the A Story to Tell Travelling Exhibition.

A Story to Tell excerpt

A Story to Tell educational notes

See also – Ceramic Triffids, Cartoon strips, Nursery rhymes and Book Binding.

The Art Ed Journal has been a magazine produced over the years which remains a valuable resource for those teachers fortunate enough to have been members of our Association over time.

The Journal includes reports, articles, ads for suppliers, reference lists, and Committee contacts. eg: flipping through some copies you may find anything from a street walk for the sculptures in Perth, starting with the Kangaroos in St Georges Tce. Turn a few page and there is a great write up of activities to do whilst on camp at Wharncliffe Mill Forrest Camp near Margaret River.

We have posted some of the older back issues of these Journals online (2001 to 2004) which cover themes such as Printmaking, Sculpture, Jewellery, New Teacher’s Survival Pack, WA ARTISTS, Multi media generated art, Textiles and the compilation of Visual Diaries. As a financial member you will receive complimentary copies of the ArtEd Journal, so why not consider joining up!

Recharged by the opportunity to take time out for our own exploration of the pit-firing experience in a magical Toodyay bush setting, simple vessels were transformed into objects of beauty through the alchemy of fire.

Recharged by the opportunity to take time out for our own exploration of the pit-firing experience in a magical Toodyay bush setting, simple vessels were transformed into objects of beauty through the alchemy of fire. The pit was packed with straw, copper carbonate, red iron oxide, rock salt, banana skins. The ceramic ware was lovingly sprayed with red iron oxide, wound in copper wire and salted twine and carefully placed amongst the layers.

The crisp Toodyay evening was enjoyed watching the flames dance around the work as the potters drank wine and watched with excitement as the pots took on their own earthy colours. Morning came to reveal the hidden treasures amongst the embers, as we delighted in the great variety of marks which imbued each piece with its own unique character. It was a good suggestion to bisque fire the pieces before pit firing.

A fantastic weekend at the Baker’s Toodyay retreat complete with great company, food and wine was enjoyed by all. As an enthusiastic participant I would urge you to take up the next ArtEd professional development opportunity and enjoy the experience!

text by Yvonne Weisse and Gen Baker.

Arts Still Alive began in 1991 from an idea prompted by a meeting of teachers during a 'sharing session'. The precursor Arts Alive : A K-12 Journal for Art Teachers was produced by the Arts and Crafts Branch of the Education Department of WA from 1975 to 1987. The Carrier projects conatined within these books are a valuable resource for any Specialist or generalist teacher looking for exemplar ideas.

Publication: Primary Sub Committee of the Art Education Association of WA

Arts Still Alive began in 1991 from an idea prompted by a meeting of teachers during a ’sharing session’. Due to the overwhelming response, a run of 100 books was photocopied and hand collated by an enthusiastic editorial team. The next year, Volume 2 was more upmarket being a professionally printed run of 250 copies. In 1996, the first coloured edition was printed and included a colour centre fold which helped to even better illustrate the artworks. In 1997, a new format was trialled which linked the Carrier Project with the Curriculum Framework. Volume 7 was a sellout of 500 copies.

Arts Still Alive is not currently being produced. Some Art Projects are written up in the Art Ed Journal which is now produced twice a year and is available to financial members only.

A diminishing stock of Back Issues is still available.
